Laptop Requirement

BYU-Idaho asks that all students have a laptop computer to assist in homework, research, writing and other steps of the learning process. Some courses will require the use of a laptop in class as well - However, since the BYU-Idaho Learning Model encourages active involvement in classroom discussions, laptops are not generally used for taking notes in class.

In majors where there is no specific laptop brand requirement, students may choose what type of laptop to use. BYU-Idaho recommends that Hewlett Packard (HP) or Apple laptops be purchased through the University Store, as agreements with vendors provide students with the best price, technology, and technical support available.

Negotiated prices on specific models at the University Store are even lower than ordering directly through HP or Apple. Purchases can be made online atbyuibookstore.com or on campus.

Students are welcome to acquire their laptops from sources other than the University Store as long as the laptop meets the minimum requirement for entry-level machines as specified by BYU-Idaho.   This will help assure that the computer can connect to the campus network.

Please see the links at the bottom of the page for information about the hardware and software  recommendations for each major/department.

NOTE:  If students choose to bring their own laptop to campus, the following wireless network cards are highly recommended:

  • o 1) Any card with the Atheros 5006 or 5008 chipset.
  • o 2) Intel 4965 AGN
  • o 3) Intel 3945 ABG (This is the card that is in the Dell Latitude 820 and 830)
  • o 4) Broadcom 4321 AGN

WiFi Alliance certified cards are highly recommended. These cards guarantee wireless access and assist the university in giving Help Desk support. Many cards on the market do not conform to its standards.

The following are the specific department hardware and software requirements:

College of Agriculture & Life Science

College of Business & Communication

College of Education & Human Development

College of Language & Letters

College of Performing & Visual Arts

College of Physical Science & Engineering

A Windows laptop will meet the needs of the vast majority of students, particularly for those majors where another brand requirement has not  been specified.  Where there is no specification students may pick the platform they prefer (Windows or Apple).
