Insurance

Co. DMBA
The Student Health Center is not a contracted provider with any insurance company aside from the Deseret Mutual Student Insurance Plan. Therefore, the Student Health Center does not bill private insurance. If you have private insurance, you may be seen at the Student Health Center, but you will be responsible for the full cost of your visit. You may have an insurance form printed out that you can mail into your insurance company. They will reimburse you in accordance with their policy.

BYU-Idaho Health Insurance Requirements

Insurance Requirement
  • BYU-Idaho requires all continuing students to have adequate medical insurance.
  • You will automatically be enrolled in the Student Health Plan when you first enroll for classes.
Waiving Enrollment in the Student Health Plan
  • You may waive BYU-Idaho Student Health Plan coverage only if you are already covered by your parent's insurance, or by an employer's insurance policy. You cannot waive BYU-Idaho insurance if you have your own private outside insurance. Waivers must be submitted by the deadline (please see catalog for dates).
  • There are two ways to waive insurance:
    • During the registration process, you may submit the waiver online.
    • You may print out the waiver here and submit it to the Student Health Center by the deadline (please see catalog for dates).
  • If your coverage from another insurance plan is discontinued while you are attending BYU-Idaho, contact the Health Center immediately.

If you have more questions on waivers, please contact the Student Health Center at (208) 496-9330.

Using the Student Health Plan

The Student Health Center is your primary source of medical care. If you need to receive treatment, make your first appointment with the SHC. If the SHC can't treat you, you'll be referred to a contracted physician in the community. You must preauthorize all care you receive outside the SHC. The SHC will coordinate the preauthorization process. If you need to see a physician outside of the SHC make sure your provider is contracted with the Deseret Mutual's Preferred Provider Network. If you use non-contracted providers, your benefits will be lower. For help finding a contracted provider, contact Deseret Mutual. If you use non-contracted providers, you will be responsible to pay any charges over maximum allowable amounts.

After-hours Medical Advice

Deseret Mutual's medical staff is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-777-3622.  If you need emergency care after SHC hours, go to the nearest contracted urgent care facility or the nearest hospital emergency room, or dial 911.

Prescriptions

The Student Health Plan now includes prescription drug coverage for everyone.  (Something about lower cost to administer the service this way)  As such, insurance premiums have changed. Please refer to the table above or to the Student Health Plan Handbook for more details.

Preventative Services

Beginning this 2012-2013 academic year, the Affordable Care Act (otherwise known as "health-care reform") mandates a number of preventive services to be covered by the Student Health Plan, with no cost to you when you see a contracted (or "network") provider. For a list of the covered preventive services, see the Student Health Plan Handbook.

NOTICE TO PLAN PARTICIPANTS

The organization that sponsors your group health plan has certified that it qualifies for a temporary enforcement safe harbor with respect to the Federal requirement to cover contraceptive services without cost sharing. During this one-year period, coverage under your group health plan will not include coverage of contraceptive services.
