How do I find out if I am eligible for VA benefits?
Visit the VA GI Bill site. Students can also call the toll-free VA Education Phone number: 1-888-442-4551 (press 1, then 0 for an operator). The benefit programs change frequently, so it is best to refer directly to the VA for questions about the programs.
Where are my benefit checks sent?
VA benefit checks are sent directly to the address students provide on the VA application. Benefit checks are NOT paid to the school. The money is intended to help defray educational expenses, but does not have to go directly toward tuition costs; it can be used any way the student wants. Exceptions to this rule:
How long am I eligible for benefits?
Eligible students receive 36 months of full time VA education benefits. This does not mean students will have to go to school full time. They can receive ½ time benefits over a period of 72 months, or ¾ time over 48 months, etc. If students are unsure how many months remain, call the VA (1-888-442-4551), and ask exactly how many months of full-time benefits they have left.
Exception to the 36 month limit - Students with eligibility under more than one program – can have a combined total of 48 months.
How long do I have to use my VA Benefits?
The amount of time students have depends on the benefits they are eligbile for. Contact the VA (1-888-442-4551), or visit the Veteran Affairs site.
How do I apply for Federal Tuition Assistance?
Tuition Assistance (TA) is determined by the unit and branch of service a student is serving under. The Financial Aid Office provides more details on the Other Resources page. Ultimately, this award is not facilitated by BYU-Idaho. Students may direct questions to Julie Howe at the Bursars Office.
Who disburses Federal Tutition Assistance?
After the unit and service processes the Tuition Assistance (TA) the funds (via check) will be sent to the BYU-Idaho Bursar's Office. The funds will be released to the student's Personal Account Summary. Students may direct questions to Julie Howe at the Bursar's Office.
I have not received my "kicker". Who should I contact?
Contact the Boise Guard/Reserve office at (208)272-3761. Students may also mail a copy of their kicker contract to the VA.
Where can I access my VA file forms (NOBE, DD214, etc.)?
A student's unit and service can provide assistance. Students may access the Integrated Personnel Electronic Records Management System (I-PERMS).
