Deferring Financial Aid
Students who intend on deferring a semester(s) for LDS Mission, Medical/Health, or Continuing Education Student reasons, need to consider the conditions for each of their awards as listed below.
**All students who plan to go on a mission in the near future must contact Admissions to get a Missionary Deferment Application**
IF you are a continuing student but planning to serve a mission...

- ...and you have previously taken out loans, you will need to contact your lender to discuss payment options while you are on your mission. To contact them, go to nslds.ed.gov.
- ...and you have loans and/or Pell grant during a semester you will be deferring, that aid will not be deferrable. When you return from your mission, you must fill out a new FAFSA for that academic school year.
- ...and you have a scholarship and will be deferring before using the second semester of it, you will receive that portion of the award when you return from your mission. To receive this deferred portion you must complete the BYU-Idaho Scholarship Application when you return.
- ...when you return from your mission, you will need to fill out the Scholarship Application for that academic school year to be considered for any university scholarships offered that year.
IF you have recently been admitted but are planning to serve a mission before you attend

- ...and you have received government aid from filling out the FAFSA, these awards will no longer be available when you return. You will need to fill out a current FAFSA for the correct academic school year when you return from your mission.
- ...and you have been awarded a scholarship, you will be able to receive both semesters of that award when you return from your mission. In order to receive this deferred portion you must complete the BYU-Idaho Scholarship Application when you return.
- ...when you return from your mission, you will need to fill out the Scholarship Application for that academic school year to be considered for any university scholarships offered that year.
