Tips for Successfully Navigating Your Job Search

  • Disclosing a Disability | Source:  Berkeley Career Center
    • Disclosing your disability is a personal decision
    • If the employer is specifically recruiting people with disabilities, you can disclose yours upfront
    • If you are unsure you can tell them after you have a job offer
    • “It is a decision that you have to make, and because your disability is yours, only you really know the answer to how you will (or will not) disclose. You are not under any obligation to do so”
    • You want to make sure that you are qualified for the position and its essential tasks

Know Your Legal Rights | Americans with Disabilities Act

  • Source:  Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 Titles I and IV
    • Employers are required to provide reasonable accommodation to qualified candidates and employees unless these accommodations would create hardship for the employers, e.g. too costly or extensive
    • Employers are only required to provide accommodations if they are aware of the disability
