Orange County Service Missionary

Joyce Curry

Orange County, CA

I was born in 1947 and raised as a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Los Angeles area of California. When I was 15, my family moved to Cohasset, Massachusetts. It was quite an adjustment for me, my first time in the snow, attending a small church branch and a New England College Prep School. I was the only Latter Day Saint in my entire school. I was blessed to get to know some teenagers from the local Mission because my father was the District President.

In July 1964, when I was 17, I married Robert Curry. He was a new convert to the church. We were married for over 53 years when my husband passed away in January 2017. We were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple and have 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. My family has always been one of my highest priorities.

We had some interesting experiences and highlights during our years of marriage together. Once, my husband managed a small private island in Newport Beach California. Due to his position we were able to live and raise our family on this little island. We had a small house surrounded by water, boats, beautiful homes, exotic gardens, and a tennis court. I was lucky to be able to stay home with our children most of the time. After my husband retired, we traveled the country in a motor home, visiting our extended families for about a year.

When my youngest two sons were in high school, I went back to school and worked to become a certified telemetry technician and a nurse’s assistant, certified in venipuncture. I worked for 17 years at Hoag hospital in Newport Beach, until I retired. I was grateful that my training helped me be able to care for my husband in our home, full time for about three years until he passed away.

I have had many church callings and have served in the following positions, Primary, teacher, President, and Stake Special Needs Primary Presidency. Young Woman’s Leader, Relief Society. Teacher, enrichment team, visiting teacher, visiting teaching supervisor, and ward activities leader. I am very excited about my calling as a Church Service Missionary for the BYU Idaho Internship Program.
